- One additional aircraft to be based in Catania, bringing the base to 4 total aircraft
- Comiso added to Wizz Air’s network, re-establishing connectivity for the airport
- Seven new routes and additional frequencies on nine existing routes, adding over 800,000 extra seats to and from Sicily
- Wizz Air becomes the largest carrier in Catania and reinforces its position as the third largest airline in the country in winter 2023
Wizz Air, Italy’s third largest airline and the most environmentally sustainable airline globally*, announces today further expansion from Italy, allocating yet another of its newest, most sustainable in its class Airbus A321neo aircraft to Catania and starting operations to Comiso. With Ryanair’s cancellations in the region this winter, impacting Comiso and Catania, these additions will make Wizz Air the #1 airline in Catania, restoring service and bringing new connectivity to the citizens of eastern Sicily. Starting from the winter season of 2023-2024, this growth along with more flights added to Catania from across the Wizz Air network, will enable the launch of seven new routes as well as increased frequency on nine existing routes. The tickets for this summer and winter are already available at wizzair.com or on the Wizz Air's mobile app.
Catania is Wizz Air’s 3rd largest base in Italy, and will grow with the allocation of another A321neo to 4 based aircraft. Along with adding Comiso to the network, the move brings the total number of the airline’s routes from Sicily to over 30, including the seven newly announced routes. Passengers will now be able to fly with Wizz Air from Catania to Hamburg, Frankfurt-Hahn (Germany), Paris Beauvais (France), Brussels Charleroi (Belgium), and Sharm El Sheikh (Egypt). Furthermore, Wizz Air puts additional capacity on sale to increase the frequency of its flights between Catania and Bologna, Turin (Italy), Memmingen (Germany), Bucharest (Romania), Budapest (Hungary), Warsaw, Krakow and Katowice (Poland), and Sofia (Bulgaria). Determined to restore connectivity for passengers in the province of Ragusa, the airline will launch operations to Comiso from its Tirana base in September 2023 and from Milan Malpensa in summer 2024.
The new services will add over 800,000 extra seats for passengers in Sicily, growing Wizz Air’s presence in the market by 34%. In total, Wizz Air now has more than 3 million seats on sale from and to Sicily.
"We know how important it is for Sicilians to stay connected with the rest of Italy and beyond, and we are happy to help all passengers of Sicily, but especially those impacted by Ryanair’s cancellations in the region this winter. Wizz Air is committed to providing more affordable travel opportunities for all passengers. With this growth, we further strengthen our offer in Sicily by increasing capacity 34%, making Catania the cornerstone of our Southern Italy presence. I’d like to thank our colleagues from SOCIETA' AEROPORTO CATANIA for their great partnership and support in working with us to build better connectivity for Sicily. We are excited to continue growing our presence in Italy, and especially in Catania and Comiso” comments Robert Carey, President at Wizz Air Group.
"We welcome Wizz Air to Comiso, and we thank them for having once again chosen Sicily's south-eastern airport network to expand, as well as for betting on our Ragusa airport to connect eastern Sicily with Tirana, which demonstrates the attractiveness of our territory and its beauty. Albania's capital is a much sought-after destination and will not only give Sicilians the opportunity to reach Eastern Europe more easily but will also allow many more tourists to arrive comfortably in Sicily. We are also very pleased with the airline's decision to base an additional aircraft in Catania, thereby strengthening its fleet and offering new opportunities, especially to business travellers. Finally, more destinations and increased frequencies on some highly sought-after routes testifies to Wizz Air's desire to guarantee that Sicilians have ever greater mobility", stated the President and CEO of SAC, Giovanna Candura and Nico Torrisi.
