The new route will provide affordable, hassle-free, and point-to-point travel opportunities for tourists and residents in both Italy and Saudi
Last weekend, Wizz Air, Europe’s fastest growing and most environmentally sustainable* airline globally, officially inaugurated the new connection between the airports of Milan Malpensa and King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah. The new route will be served twice a week. Tickets can be purchased on Wizz Air's website and via the WIZZ app, with fares starting from 79.99€.*.
The inauguration of the new route further strengthens the cooperation between the airline and the Saudi Kingdom, in order to promote the tourism industry of both countries, bringing a new era of affordable, hassle-free and direct travel opportunities to Jeddah from the main hub in northern Italy.
Also known as 'the gateway to Saudi Arabia', Jeddah has for centuries been the destination of many pilgrims on their way to the holy cities of Medina and Mecca. Today, it is a metropolis with a population of three million people, able to amaze even the most experienced traveler thanks to the presence of natural wonders and an incredible historical and cultural heritage that make it a perfect mix of tradition and modernity.
The route between Milan Malpensa and Jeddah is part of a line-up of twenty-three new routes to Saudi Arabia announced in recent months by Wizz Air, confirming the airline's commitment to supporting the country's growing tourism sector by bringing more than one million passengers to the Kingdom. In April 2023, Wizz Air will also launch flights from Milan Malpensa airport to Riyadh. The airline’s growing presence is in line with its Vision 2030 Programme, a strategic and ambitious goal to triple passenger traffic in Saudi Arabia by 2030.
Wizz Air signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Investment of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in [May] 2022. The MoU is supported by the Saudi National Air Connectivity Programme, an initiative of the Ministry of Tourism, aimed at improving the development of the Saudi tourism sector. It reflects a shared vision between the parties on the potential that Wizz Air could bring to the Kingdom to stimulate tourism demand, thus contributing significantly to Saudi Arabia's planned growth.
Evelin Jeckel, Network Officer at Wizz Air stated: "It is with great pleasure that we inaugurate this new connection from Milan Malpensa Airport to Saudi Arabia, which will also allow all travelers departing from northern Italy to benefit from the immense historical, artistic and cultural heritage that the Saudi Kingdom, and especially the city of Jeddah, has to offer. With this new route, moreover, Wizz Air once again confirms its commitment to Saudi Arabia, where it will continue to innovate and carry forward the banner of low-cost flying for the benefit of Saudi residents and visitors and the country's diversifying economy."
Ayman bin Abdulaziz Abu Abbat, the CEO of Jeddah Airports, added: "Attracting more air carriers to the airport keeps pace with economic growth and increased demand for air transport services, as terminal (1) is currently operating, with a current capacity of (30) million passengers annually, reaching (114) million passengers by 2030, to move towards achieving the aspirations of the wise leadership, in developing services related to travelers, including the valuable guests of both Pilgrims and Umrah performers. This will strengthen the successful work with partners from the authorities operating at the airport, in order to achieve the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 and the National Strategy for Transport and Logistics Services. He also stressed the continuation of Jeddah Airports to provide new destinations for travelers is within the strategic plan to develop both air traffic and enhance the competitiveness of the airport in order to keep pace with the major development witnessed by the Kingdom in various fields."
Khalil Lamrabet, the CEO of the Air Connectivity Program stated: “With more direct flights unlocked, we offer tourists from Italy’s northern economic powerhouse more flexible options to visit one of the Kingdom’s commercial hubs and explore its unique heritage treasures. At the Air Connectivity Program, we are looking forward to working with WizzAir in enhancing air connectivity and supporting their growth in the Kingdom.’’
