Wizz Air becomes one of the biggest airlines at Rome Fiumicino, besides already being the 3rd largest airline in Italy. The development of the airline’s base at Rome Fiumicino will not only create over 40 new direct jobs with the airline, but will support the creation of 375 new jobs in the associated industries too.
The new investment will further support the ramp up of local tourism and strengthen the economic ties between Italy and other countries. Wizz Air is keen on further developing its Italian offer, making further significant investments in the country, introducing additional aircraft and offering the largest ever seat capacity next summer in Italy.
While speaking at the press conference George Michalopoulos, Chief Commercial Officer of Wizz Air added: ““We are excited to offer more routes than any other airline from Rome Fiumicino by adding the 5th aircraft to our base - with 13 new routes to much awaited leisure destinations including the Greek Islands, Balearics, key Western European and Central and Eastern European destinations. Wizz Air operates Italy’s youngest and most efficient and sustainable fleet of aircraft with an average age of only 5.1 years. We look forward to welcoming passengers to experience our exceptional service on board our new, environmentally friendly Airbus aircraft.”
Ivan Bassato, Chief Aviation Officer of Aeroporti di Roma said: “We are very pleased to welcome the developments announced today for the next summer season, and which once again confirm the strategic nature of our market. Aeroporti di Roma confirms its role as a reference player, representing one of the main markets in Europe and one of the most important in the world. We want to find ourselves prepared for the great changes that await us starting with sustainability. We have announced the Net Zero 30 goal and now we are at the forefront for the deployment of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel). The Fiumicino airport is in fact the first airport in Italy to make available SAF, a blend of traditional Jet with a biogenic component, the latter capable of reducing CO2 emissions by 60-90%”.
