MethodologyÂ
We looked at countries with the highest safety index and lowest crime index on Numbeo, then combined that data with what percentage of the population is single. We wanted to find countries that combined a high level of personal safety with a singles-friendly culture.
Each country’s official statistics have been used to find the total number of ‘single’ people, which in nearly every case is the total numbers of never married, widowed and divorced people added together. Iceland counts those in committed relationships separately and this group has not been counted as ‘single’. The percentage of unmarried people has been worked out for each country using this data.Â
The data on different countries’ crime index and safety index was sourced from Numbeo.Â
We also included how many times each country’s name appeared in Instagram hashtags such as ‘#(Country)SoloTravel’, ‘#(Country)SoloTrip’, ‘#(Country)SoloAdventure’ and ‘#SoloTravel(Country)’. We then also compared each country’s average yearly precipitation and the length of its coastline.Â
All these factors were added together, and the crime index was deducted, to create the final score.
