Sweden is simplicity and style, forests and islands, ferry trips and fika coffee breaks, royal elegance and old-town charm. From Viking maritime voyages to the ultra-modern bridge at Malmö, fishing, sailing and kayaking, Swedes know how to live on and near the water, and you can experience it too. All in Swedish design style, which you can explore in glass, art and photography museums as well as witness in architecture, interiors and culinary creations. Stroll old towns, step into Gothic churches, or revel in royal splendour at palaces, for holidays in Sweden that suit your every interest – indoor, outdoor and aesthetic.
Travel to Sweden to:
- Island-hop in Stockholm, a city of 14 islands, or in the Gothenburg Archipelago of 20 islands on Sweden’s west coast.
- Traverse the eight-kilometre Öresund Bridge linking Sweden and Denmark at Malmö.
- Wander the interior water wonderland at countless lakes and forests near Växjö.
- Awaken your inner Dancing Queen and don a virtual costume to sing with ABBA at the ABBA Museum in Stockholm.
- Party all night with locals at midsummer in Sweden, when the sun never sets.
- Celebrate a magical Christmas in Sweden, with markets, candlelight, sugar and spice.
A colourful destination in every sense
Sweden is admired for a lot of things, and deserves applause for its appeal as a destination as well. There are plenty of ways to enjoy the peace of Sweden’s islands, forests, lakes and sea, and the locals are prepared to show you and then let you be. Renowned for design, discover Sweden’s aesthetics in every part of life from a Viking rune to a whitewashed church interior, an art gallery to a café or workplace. Go explore, and relax, in Sweden’s remarkable cities, towns, villages, islands, national parks and seashore.
Island charm
Swedish life is often all about islands – Stockholm commuters take ferries to work, while Gothenburg has Dutch-made canals and its own archipelago off the coast. Swedes spend their summers in red-and-white seaside cottages, and national parks protect many of the islands, their forests, marshes, dunes and wildlife. Experience the charm of tiny fishing villages like Mollösund or Åstol in the Gothenburg archipelago, or go upscale for the yachting scene at Marstrand, a short sail to Denmark or Norway. From Stockholm, where you’ll spend your whole holiday on urban islands, venture out to Sandhamn, home to the Royal Swedish Yacht Club, but also quiet enough for peaceful walks through dunes and forests, beaches and cliffs overlooking the Baltic Sea. There are even islands inland in Sweden – Åsnen National Park, near Växjö, is named for a lake with more than a thousand of them – a real hiking, biking and kayaking paradise.
Understated Swedish design
Sweden is all about simplicity and class, form and function fused beautifully in architecture, the arts, and even cuisine. Gothenburg, an industrial port city that has generated its own hip urban vibe, boasts an opera house that evokes seagull wings, a skyscraper called The Lipstick, and a fresh fish market inspired by Nordic stave churches back in 1874. The city’s Röhsska Museum of design and applied arts is among the world’s best, and it boasts a whopping six Michelin-starred restaurants featuring innovative Swedish cuisine. In Malmö, the spectacularly simple-looking Öresund Bridge linking Sweden and Denmark lives harmoniously alongside the Turning Torso skyscraper, Art Nouveau, Renaissance and medieval masterpieces. Malmö Konsthall art space itself is quite a creation, of concrete, glass and skylights. Stockholm’s Sofo neighbourhood is dotted with design and art galleries, while Södermalm has artsy shops and the Fotografiska photo museum. In Växjö, everything revolves around glass, and you can try glass-blowing yourself. But there’s no need to seek out Swedish design – it will be all around you even as you enjoy a fika, the Swedish coffee and cake break that’s nearly mandatory every afternoon. Not to mention in the simple candlelight and lovely ornaments that twinkle at Christmas in Sweden.
Viking and royal history
It’s exciting to delve into Sweden’s Viking past, its long-time rivalry with Denmark and its royal history from medieval to Baroque to modern. Visit a reconstructed Viking village with period-costumed blacksmiths and weavers, tour the actual Viking ruins in the fields at Birka, near Stockholm, or explore Uppsala, an old university town with Viking and medieval roots. Malmö Castle is a round red-brick fortress that once protected the Swedes from the Danes, who are of course now peacefully linked by a bridge. Kronoberg Castle was a stronghold on the border between Sweden and Denmark for 200 years, now in ruins on an island in a lake. Step through Swedish rural history at Skansen in Stockholm. Skip forward to Baroque Versailles-style elegance at Drottningholm Palace, the private residence of the Swedish royal family, or the official Royal Palace in Stockholm, also Baroque, with 1,430 rooms. Both palaces are on islands, of course.
