Norway

Choose Norway for the most natural of holidays. Cruise, hike or bike to explore the longest country in Europe, with almost 100,000 kilometres of coastline if you include all the islands. Speaking of islands, hop from one to the other over bridges or on ferries, taking in tiny villages and charming lighthouses. Rising from every fjord are majestic mountains waiting to be climbed, on convenient sherpa-built stairways or more challenging rock faces. At the top, watch waterfalls plunge into the fjords below. Norway isn’t all about nature, however – its cities are rich in history, infused with imaginative culinary and visual arts, with architecture both ancient and avant-garde.

Travel to Norway to:

  • Witness the magical Northern Lights that shine above Norway in winter. They can be elusive, so go above the Arctic Circle, to Bodø or Tromsø, to chase them with the locals by dog sled, snowmobile, minibus or boat.
  • Discover fjords and islands, mountains and waterfalls, sights to be found near every Norwegian city. Try the Norway in a Nutshell tour from Bergen to see them all in one go.
  • Seek out the catch of the day. Enjoy sumptuous seafood especially in the island-bound Ålesund, Norway’s most important fishing harbour.
  • Soak up the richness of history and royalty in the capital of Norway. Beyond Oslo, you’ll find a fortress and a royal residence in Trondheim as well.
  • Viking history runs deep, of course, as deep as the three massive Viking swords plunged into the rock at Stavanger. Visit the Viking birthplace of Norway at Haugesund, or view Viking ships at an Oslo museum.
  • Delight in the charm of colourful wooden homes and buildings such as the Hanseatic warehouses lining Bergen harbour, homes on Ovre Holmegate street in Stavanger, or in the villages that hug the fjords, such as Røros, near Trondheim.
  • Visit Molde, the 'City of Roses' for a charming Norwegian experience. The Moldemarka hills provide ample opportunity for hiking, rock climbing and ice climbing, while the archipelago offers some of the best salmon and cod in the Nordic region.

A refreshing Nordic adventure

Norway is cool in more ways than one. It’s the perfect combination of pristine nature, wilderness and water, plus urban experiences with culinary and cultural treasures. On a clear day, explore sheltered islands and fjords, or venture into the open sea. There are even sandy beaches! Climb a mountain to see the expanse of the sea, an alpine range of as many as 222 peaks, or a thundering waterfall. On a rainy day, explore Norway’s Viking, medieval or folk history, and find out about its petroleum industry or its polar expedition prowess at museums and monuments. Relax with a coffee or a craft beer next to a fire in a cosy café or pub in a charming street or on the waterfront. Finish your day with a meal of fresh fish, a reindeer steak, wine, craft beer, or akvavit, the local fire water, and a stroll under the midnight sun or a viewing of the aurora borealis.

Fjords, mountains and waterfalls

Every major Norwegian city is on a fjord or the sea, or so it seems, often surrounded by islands on one side, and mountains on the other. The city of Ålesund, already an Art Nouveau architectural wonder, occupies seven islands, and Bergen is known as the City of Seven Mountains. From Ålesund or Molde, consider driving the undulating, island-hopping Atlantic Ocean Road, which has been called the world’s best road trip, no less! For the most remote adventure, make your way to the Lofoten Islands, which dot the coastline of Northern Norway with a total land area of 1,200 square kilometres. Don’t miss Mardalsfossen, the highest waterfall in Northern Europe either. Hiking opportunities abound in Norway, including the challenging Trollveggen, the Troll Wall, Europe’s tallest vertical, or Pulpit Rock, seemingly suspended above the long and lovely Lysefjorden. Experienced hikers may also want to brave Kjeragbolten, a rock wedged in a cliff 1000 metres over the fjord.

Fresh air, fresh fish

Norwegians live in harmony with the sea and the land, unfazed by the chilly winds, rain or snow. Local food specialities really are local and fresh, such as fish caught from nearby waters or reindeer and lamb raised on mountainsides. Try skrei and klippfisk, two types of cod, or whale carpaccio, if you so choose. Trondheim and Stavanger also boast Michelin-starred restaurants. At Bergen Fish Market, seemarvel at enormous crabs and lobsters among the biggest array of seafood in the country -– you can try these at the food stalls or nearby restaurants. For another way to see Norwegian sea life, visit the aquariums at Bergen, Tromsø, or Ålesund – at the latter, penguins huddle and seals lounge on the rocks by the sea.

See the Northern Lights or midnight sun in Norway

Wondering about the best time to see the Northern Lights in Norway? Well, in winter, of course, but you also need a clear day (er, night) and the right location. Luckily, the scientists at the Norwegian Centre for Space Weather make predictions on an hourly basis for cities and towns across Norway, for expert guidance on when and where to best seeenjoy the aurora borealis. In summer, see the opposite phenomenon, the midnight sun. Bodø, Wizz Air’s northernmost destination, above the Arctic Circle, has six full weeks of nearly 24-hour sun, in June and July. You can enjoy long days throughout June, July and August everywhere in Norway, so take full advantage of the opportunity for day trips into the wonders of Norwegian nature.
