It’s old. It’s deep. It’s the “pearl” of Macedonia - Lake Ohrid, a body of water they say is 4 million years old, almost 300 metres deep and full of native species. In a landlocked country it’s the place where locals go for an experience that is much like the seaside, but it’s also a natural paradise laden with things to discover.
Are you ready to dive into a natural landscape that is a UNESCO World Heritage site? The Lake Ohrid area is becoming increasingly popular with adventurous travellers like you. Let Wizz Air take you there!
Nature is monumental around this unique body of water, which is surrounded by mountains that are snow-capped in the winter. In summer, it is possible to swim, snorkel and dive in the gorgeous lake, as well as sunbathe in resort areas there. It’s also heaven for hikers and/or those who enjoy scenic walks.
You can also rent a boat or take a water taxi to see different areas around Lake Ohrid. The settlements around the lake are famous for their 365 churches. While there might not be that many left today, be sure to check out the remaining exotic Orthodox churches and monasteries, like the Byzantine style Church of St. John of Kaneo. Take in the ancient frescoes that adorn the inside of these structures and feel the history in your bones.
Lake Ohrid’s main town, Ohrid, is a picturesque settlement with cobblestone ways that roam through the quaint little town. You would also do well to wander around the Old Town and make your way up to an intact fortress that offers excellent views of the water, or enjoy coffee, local beer or an inexpensive meal in a truly chilled-out atmosphere.
