Wizz Air, Romania’s largest airline, today has announced further expansion of its Sibiu base by allocating a second aircraft in summer 2025*, marking a total of 33 overall in Romania. Sibiu is of crucial importance to Wizz Air, and the company is happy to boost capacity from the Transylvanian city, adding more than 320 thousand seats in the summer of 2025, an increase of 58% compared to the last summer. The base will operate 11 routes to 6 countries, as well as increase frequency of 3 existing routes. Thus, Wizz Air continues to offer more affordable travel options, meeting the growing demand for budget-friendly flights.
This addition to the Romanian fleet in August 2025 marks a significant step forward for Wizz Air’s operations. The aircraft will enhance connectivity by enabling the launch of six routes. Starting from beginning of August 2025, passengers can fly on the new routes from Sibiu to Vienna, Hamburg, Frankfurt Hahn, Basel, Rome Fiumicino and Madrid (prices start from EUR 14.99 or RON 79). Wizz Air also will increase frequency of flights to Memmingen (will operate daily), Nuremberg and Baden-Baden (both will be served four times per week)
Since the start of its Romanian operations in 2006, Wizz Air has steadily increased its investment, recognizing the country as a pivotal market. Currently, the airline operates 169 routes from 13 Romanian airports, connecting passengers to 72 destinations across 24 countries. Over the past 18 years, Wizz Air has established six operational bases in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iași, Timișoara, Craiova, and Sibiu. The airline employs more than 1,500 people in Romania.
Speaking today at a press conference in Sibiu, Mauro Peneda, Managing Director of Wizz Air Malta, commented: “We are proud to hold a leading 55% market share in Romania, a cornerstone market for Wizz Air, and further expand our operations, marking our continuous commitment to the country. Today, we are excited to announce essential developments in Sibiu, including the introduction of six routes to Vienna, Hamburg, Frankfurt Hahn, Basel, Rome Fiumicino and Madrid. All of this will be supported by allocating the second aircraft to the base in Sibiu, advancing towards our ‘WIZZ 500’ strategy.”
Vlad Vasiu, Vice-President of Sibiu County Council, said: “This is a remarkable achievement, the result of a long-standing collaboration with Wizz Air, the constant support of Sibiu County Council and the hard work of the Sibiu International Airport team. These combined efforts allow us to announce today with joy this long-awaited news. The opening of the six new routes and the reallocation of an additional aircraft is not only a symbol of the success of this collaboration, but also an important step towards strengthening regional and international links. This expansion opens up new travel opportunities for the inhabitants of Sibiu County and the entire region, facilitating direct access to destinations around the world. I am convinced that the partnership between Wizz Air and Sibiu International Airport, under the coordination of Sibiu County Council, will continue to grow and develop in the years to come. Together, we are committed to providing travellers with an increasingly pleasant, efficient and comfortable experience.”
Marius Ioan Gîrdea, General Manager of Sibiu International Airport, said: “Today, we are pleased to announce a new beginning for the Wizz Air base in Sibiu, with the reallocation of the second aircraft and the opening of six new routes that will connect our community to various international destinations. This important achievement would not have been possible without the strong partnership with Wizz Air, which has supported us throughout this process. In this context, we would like to express our appreciation to Sibiu County Council, as the Airport Trustee Authority, for their support and for the trust they have placed in us to develop this project. Our collaboration is essential for the success of our joint initiatives. The last few years have been full of challenges and constructive questions from the community, but we would like to emphasize one essential point: we are a united and dedicated team, which has worked tenaciously and discreetly to achieve our goals. We have focused our efforts on finding solutions and delivering concrete results. This achievement is a testament to the power of collaboration and the support of trusted partners, along with the confidence of our passengers. Today’s success is not only a team victory, but also a lesson about the positive impact of confidence and patience in overcoming challenges. Thank you to everyone who stood with us and trusted in our vision. We remain committed to our mission of connecting people with their favourite destinations, and today is, in our opinion, just the beginning of a promising phase.”
Tickets for these routes are already on sale on wizzair.com and the airline’s official app. This development underscores Wizz Air’s commitment to travellers by offering more options and flexibility for leisure and business journeys alike.
Since its first flight from Sibiu in 2014, Wizz Air has become a trusted choice for affordable travel. In line with its sustainability goals, the airline continues to operate one of the youngest and most fuel-efficient fleets in the industry, reinforcing its role as a responsible and forward-thinking leader.
