The advent period in Debrecen is rich in festive events. To name just a few, we recommend the concert of the International Nativity Play Meeting on 13-14th December when Hungarian folk groups coming from all over the Carpathian basin stage dramatic nativity plays recalling biblical scenes and relating folk traditions. If you like it hard, pop in for the “Metal Christmas” party on 21th of December and enjoy the concerts in the local ruin pub.

January may seem long and dull after the Christmas holidays but is just perfect to start the New Year with a visit to Debrecen. As a city faithful to its traditions, local events centre around two main things in January: the carnival season and the Hungarian Culture Day celebrated all over the country on 22nd January.
