4 BASED AIRCRAFT AND 32 NEW ROUTES
Today is another milestone in Wizz Air’s Italian operations as the airline opens its base at Rome Fiumicino airport. The newly opened base further strengthens Wizz Air’s presence in Italy, and is a strong testimony to its commitment to developing the Italian network. With 4 Airbus A321 aircraft at the country’s capital and biggest aviation market, at Rome Fiumicino airport and with the launch of 32 new services, Europe’s fastest-growing airline continues to grow its Italian offer in order to provide passengers with a wide variety of destinations with fares as low as 19.99EUR*.
Wizz Air’s history in Italy dates back to 2004 when the very first flight departed from Bergamo to Katowice, Poland. Since then, the airline has carried over 40 million passengers to and from the country. In little over 12 months, Wizz Air has also deployed 19 aircraft across Italy and operates a total of 261 routes to 91 destinations in 33 countries. This dynamic growth represents a +80% increase in capacity since the announcement of the establishment of the airline’s first base in Italy in the spring of 2020.
Wizz Air’s continued investment in the market will support stable, post-pandemic recovery of the Italian tourism sector, as well as boost economic growth in the country and provide long awaited low-fare and high quality services for passengers craving for a little holiday after such a long lockdown.
Speaking at the base opening ceremony at Rome Fiumicino today, George Michalopoulos, Chief Commercial Officer of Wizz Air Group said: “I am delighted to celebrate the opening of our newest base at Rome Fiumicino Airport. Our expansion in Rome underpins our commitment to continue investing in Italy and supporting Italy’s economic recovery as well as offering consumers a wide range of affordable destinations at low fares. In the last 12 months we have allocated 19 based aircraft to Italy, and will continue to invest in the market doubling our presence in the next three years launching further operating bases and new domestic and international routes. Our brand new A320neo-family aircraft as well as our enhanced protective measures will ensure the best possible sanitary conditions for travellers while operating with the lowest environmental footprint. We welcome the introduction of the EU COVID-19 certificate and hope that it will support the easier and worry-free movement of people within the European Union. We look forward to welcoming passengers on board with great service and a smile, while we strive to become Italy’s most-loved and environmentally conscious airline.”
Today’s announcement comes as the European Union introduces the EU COVID-19 certificate, also known as the “Green pass”. The EU Digital COVID Certificate will facilitate safe and free movement of citizens in the EU during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The certificate will be introduced and accepted in all EU Member States and will become available starting from today, 1 July 2021. It will help to ensure that restrictions currently in place can be lifted in a coordinated manner. When travelling, the EU Digital COVID-19 Certificate holder should in principle be exempted from free movement restrictions: Member States should refrain from imposing additional travel restrictions on the holders of an EU Digital COVID Certificate, unless they are necessary and proportionate to safeguard public health.
The opening of Wizz Air’s newest base in Italy today reinforces the airline’s pledge to an environmentally-conscious operations. With a fleet based in Italy of an average age of 0.9 years consisting of the most efficient and sustainable Airbus A320neo family single aisle aircraft currently available, Wizz Air’s carbon-dioxide emissions are the lowest among European airlines in FY2020 (57.2 gr/km/passenger). Thanks to the largest order book of over 244 aircraft from the state-of-the-art Airbus A320neo family, the airline has made a commitment to further cut its environmental footprint by 25% for every passenger until 2030, alongside over 60 sustainability initiatives, including carbon offsetting, fuel efficiency and noise reduction.
Wizz Air was one of the first airlines to introduce a new era of sanitized travel, with enhanced hygiene measures to ensure the health and safety of passengers and crew across its network. Click here to view Wizz Air’s health and safety video.
By adding WIZZ Flex to a booking, passengers can rest assured that if circumstances change, or they simply wish to travel on a different date or to a different destination, that they will be able to rebook on any WIZZ flight of their choice. Providing that extra layer of protection for passenger bookings offers a peace of mind during these uncertain times.
Ivan Bassato Chief Aviation Officer of Rome Fiumicino Airport said:
