Bulgaria’s Black Sea Coast has plenty of summer-holiday charms, with beaches to suit every taste. Serious suntan seekers will love Varna’s candy-striped umbrellas and the sunbeds, which are sprinkled across the city’s main beach like confetti, backdropped by resorts with ever-ready piña coladas. And just 45 minutes away there are a handful of relaxed seaside villages, where locals seem to go about their life as they did hundreds of years ago.
“The Black Sea has quite a different feel to the Mediterranean, but there’s no shortage of golden sandy beaches and cool beach bars in Varna like Cubo,” says travel photographer Tim E White.
“Anyone up for a bit of adventure should also explore the coast north of Varna: stop by some traditional fishing villages, such as Balchik, where restaurants serve fabulous seafood, then continue on to the fortress at Kaliakra.”
