The Autonomous Region of Cantabria, in the north of Spain, offers wide-ranging possibilities for tourism, where diversity and quality mark the difference. Cantabria is a land of great contrasts featuring over 6,500 caves, as well as incomparable scenery bathed by the Cantabrian Sea and crowned by the Picos de Europa Mountain Range. The natural variety and beauty of Cantabria together with its artistic, cultural and historical wealth makes this region one of the most regularly visited by tourists from Spain and abroad.
Cantabria offers a complete range of plans that can be visited during a three or four day trip: El Soplao and Altamira caves, bastions of an impressive underground heritage of more than 6.500 caves, 10 of which named World Heritage, Cabarceno’s Nature Park, where more than one thousand animals from the five continents live in semi freedom, or its romanic art, its coastal gothic, the seaside villages and the Modernism in Comillas, Santander’s bay o the Fuente Dé cable car, which brings the visitor up to the heart of the Picos de Europa. Also the “Camino del Norte”, one of the ways to Santiago de Compostela drives you along the coast. Santander, the capital of this region, is a modern city with a population located on a beautiful south-facing bay, which belongs to the Club of the World’s Most Beautiful Bays.
Tourism in Santander began in the mid-nineteenth century with the first “wave baths” on the Sardinero beaches and culminated with the summer visits of the king and queen of Spain from 1913 to 1930, becoming the summer court during this period. Few cities can boast including within their urban area a dozen beaches with such diverse characteristics and, at the same time, so attractive. All ready to give the best of themselves both during the summer and on mild winter and autumn days.
The city has a rich and varied cultural and artistic heritage to enjoy every day of the year. In fact, in July 2017, the “Botin Centre” was inaugurated. It is an Arts Centre designed by the architect Renzo Piano, located in a privileged part of Santander.
Santander Airport-also known as Seve Ballesteros-Santander Airport - is located 6 km south of the city of Santander.
